DR. JOHN RACE died at his residence in this city on Thursday evening, April 26th., aged 79 years. His death was not sudden, he having been an invalid for the past three years. Dr. Race was born in Loudon Co., Va., in 1804, and came to Ohio with his parents in 1806, settling in Columbiana County when the State was a vast wilderness. Amongst his earliest associations was the tribe of Indians of which Capt. Pipe, who afterwards lived in Richland County, was the Chief. At this time comparatively few settlers had taken up their abode west of the Ohio River. He was no stranger to the trials and hardships of pioneer life. Reared in a rude log cabin, surrounded by hardy woodmen, he soon learned to use the axe and the mattock. His early life was spent in cleaning land, chopping cord-wood and farming, his education having been almost wholly neglected; and it was only after he had attained to the years of young manhood that he began to turn his attention to books. Later he entered the medical profession, in which capacity he labored faithfully for nearly forty years. He was the father of ten children, eight of whom survive him, one of the latter being Dr. W.H. Race, a successful physician well-known in this community. He was a member of the Methodist Church, having been baptized into that faith in the Ohio River in 1835. His funeral took place on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended.
